Review: Wild Flours Giffnock

A carefully sampled review - Wild Flours, Giffnock

Wild Flours Giffnock

From the minute I decided to create this blog, I knew the first place I had to write a review on was Wild Flours. They are a family-run gluten free bakery in the Giffnock area within Glasgow. Back when I was initially diagnosed, the main food group I grieved the loss of was cake - and having a major sweet tooth, this hit me hard. Lucky for me, my boyfriend knew this and went on the hunt for a place in which I could continue to get my sugar fix. He approached me excitedly presenting their Facebook page on his phone and suggested we give it a try. One sunny spring afternoon (can you tell I vividly remember the first good gluten free day I had?) we decided to pop in before we headed off to a Celtic Connections show (surprisingly good, not my usual cup of tea) and by god did my jaw hit the floor when we walked in. Now if you are to go, I would recommend going in the morning/early afternoon to get a good selection, I was actually sceptical of writing this review due to an increased interest which would ultimately mean I have to get up earlier at the weekend to get the best variety. They sell out pretty quick, the proof is in the pudding so to speak. On that day, I opted for the Nutella Fudge Cake meanwhile my boyfriend preferred the look of Victoria Sponge alongside two Americano's. I actually remember taking my first bite, shoving a forkful into my mouth and the joy that instantly filled my little greedy belly knowing that my prayers had been answered - I didn't have to live off gluten free brownies for the rest of my life. Between the mix of the Nutella icing and the light, fluffy sponge, I was hooked.

Wild Flours Nutella Cake

Wild Flours came about in 2013 by mother and son, Anne and Calum. After grafting away in their home kitchen for four years which resulted in an award win for Best Bakery in South West Scotland and the latter, the Coffee Shop today which we all know and love.

Since my first encounter, I have been back religiously every Sunday with the exception of holidays. Not only is it my favourite place to go (and buy in bulk), my boyfriend has also taken a fancy to the cakes and annoyingly steals edibles out my box - there is nothing more annoying than someone able to eat a cake anywhere they go yet they steal your carefully sought out goodies. In summer days the garden area is well equipped with benches, and for when the weather changes and becomes a little brisk, they even provide blankets to cosy up under with a coffee. Rainy days, the indoor seating allows you to bask in the smell of freshly baked goods whilst hearing the Scottish rain batter down against the window. The majority of time though, we will head in on Sunday afternoon to pick up a box of cakes and cookies to take away and then head to Catch for a gluten free fish supper!

Wild Flours Cookies

The cookies are a good mix of soft and chewy and to this day I still can't decide between the sea salt toffee and the triple chocolate chip. The sea salt has the perfect mix of sweet and salty with the cookie falling apart in your mouth. The triple chocolate chip is pretty self-explanatory on why it's a contender as my favourite cookie. Chocolate? Check, more chocolate? Check, cookie? Check.

Wild Flours Brownie

Now I know this is most gluten free folk's worst fear when it comes to gluten free options as it seems to be the majority of coffee shops everywhere favourite gluten free option to serve. I cannot skip the brownie selection, every single one they sell is moist yet cakey, with the biggest chocolate chunks I've ever came across in a gluten free brownie. They even offer a vegan option if dairy is an issue.

Wild Flours Empire

My boyfriends' favourite choice is the Empire Biscuit. Simple, yet hard to perfect for most. The biscuit is firm and buttery, yet crumbly. The perfect amount of icing dolloped on top accompanied by a glazier cherry. We sometimes have a bicker when we are down to the last one, in which one of us will eventually compromise and reluctantly agree to give the other half. The biscuit underneath the caramel shortbread is the perfect accompaniment to the chocolatey caramel layers on top.

Wild Flours Kinder Cake

Hands down, my favourite range of cakes they sell is your traditional sponge based cake,(I'm not sure that's the correct terminology?). The Lemon Drizzle, Victoria Sponge Cake, Nutella Fudge Cake and both the Red Velvet and Carrot Cupcakes are all up there however my favourite out of them all has to be the Kinder Cake. Which reformed gluten free individual wouldn't enjoy the light airy white sponge with kinder butter cream icing on top with chocolate goodness oozing down the sides? It is one of those cakes that if you tried home alone, you would sit with your arms in the air rejoicing for five minutes before taking your second bite.

Wild Flours Muffin

Lastly, my second favourite has to be the muffins. My top tip would be to take a chocolate and orange muffin home to pop in the microwave for 30 seconds. Warm orange sponge with melting bursts of chocolate throughout...

Wild Flours Victoria Sponge

Albeit I have sampled quite an extensive variety of the selection of cakes they offer, I have yet make my way through them all and I've still to sample any of the loaves that they offer for takeaway, I did however try a toastie once and can confirm the bread is up there. All loaf, zero holes. The main selling point for me though is the customer service. You are sure to be greeted by a smile as soon as you walk in the door. Staff are extremely helpful, bubbly and attentive who are even willing to help you decide if you are stuck on making a choice. Pardon the pun, but the customer-centric approach at Wild Flours in regards to customer service really is the icing on the cake.

Wild Flours Loaf Cake

I'm going to wrap up here, mainly because after writing this review and sampling half the menu (my excuse is that I needed a reminder on how they taste) I am quite frankly, in need of a lie down. Let me know if you decide to try them out for yourselves, and if you do please let me know what you think! I'd love to know that I gave another (as Wild Flours say) 'gluten hater' faith in knowing you can continue to eat, if not better, delicious cakes!
